*Marriage Match Making as per Vedic Astrology: What Really Matters Beyond 36 Gunas



Marriage in Indian culture isn’t just a union of two people - it’s a union of two families, two lifestyles, and two destinies. In Vedic astrology, _marriage astrology_ or _vivah kundli milan_ is the system used to check compatibility before fixing the relationship. In Gujarat, we call it *lagna jodvanu* or *kundli milan* before the *sagai* and *lagna*.


But most people think it’s only about 36 _gunas_. That’s incomplete. Here’s what actually matters in Vedic match making:


*1. 36 Gunas Matching - The Starting Point, Not the End*


The Ashtakoota system has 8 categories that add up to 36 _gunas_. In Gujarat we say *“36 guna na 18 guna to hoy j joyie”* for a basic match.

*What Rajkot families should know*: 18+ gunas is considered a good match. 24+ is excellent. Below 18 means you need to check other factors before rejecting the proposal.


*2. Mangal Dosha - The Most Feared but Most Misunderstood*


In Gujarat we call it *“Mangal”* or *“Kuja Dosha”*. If Mars sits in 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house in either kundli, it creates aggression and conflict in marriage.


*Common myth*: “If both have Mangal, it gets cancelled.” That’s only partly true. The intensity, placement, and strength of Mars in both charts must be similar.


*Practical view*: Today’s lifestyle has diluted Mangal’s impact. A proper astrologer checks if the _dosha_ is _pariharam_ - cancelled by other planetary positions.


*3. 7th House and Venus - The Real Marriage Indicators*


While _gunas_ show surface compatibility, the 7th house in both kundlis shows the actual marriage life.


- *7th house lord*: Shows the nature of spouse and marriage quality

- *Venus*: _Shukra_ is the planet of love and marital happiness in Vedic astrology  

- *Jupiter*: For women, Jupiter shows husband’s character and longevity


If the 7th house has malefic planets like Rahu or Saturn, it can cause delay in marriage or misunderstandings after *pheras*.


*4. Nadi Dosh - The One You Can’t Ignore*


Nadi has 8 points and is the most critical for progeny and health. If both boy and girl have the same Nadi - _Adi, Madhya, or Antya_ - it’s called Nadi Dosh.


*Why it matters*: It can affect childbirth and long-term health of the couple.  

*Exception*: If both have same _rashi_ and same _nakshatra_, Nadi Dosh gets cancelled. In Gujarat we call this *“ek nadi, ek rashi”* exception.


*5. Beyond the Kundli - Practical Compatibility*


A kundli can show 32 gunas but if the boy and girl have opposite mindsets about career, finances, or family, the marriage will struggle. 


In Rajkot, I’ve seen many *arranged marriages* work well even with 20-22 gunas because families are aligned and communication is strong. And I’ve seen 36 guna matches fail because of ego clashes.


Vedic astrology gives you a _map_, not the _journey_. The _map_ shows where roads might be rough. It’s up to the couple to drive carefully.


*What Happens in a Proper Kundli Milan*


As a *panditji* or astrologer I don’t just count gunas. I check

1. *Dasha compatibility* - Are both entering a good life phase during marriage?

2. *Lagna compatibility* - Are the ascendants friendly?

3. *Remedies if needed* - _Graha shanti puja_ or gemstone suggestions before *lagna*


*Final Word for Modern Couples*


_Marriage astrology_ is a tool to reduce risk, not to create fear. If the gunas are low but both families are supportive and the couple communicates well, many issues can be handled.


If the gunas are high but there’s no respect or trust, even the best _kundli_ won’t help.
